There Are Five Candidates for Doritos' Super Bowl Ad. One is Pretty Funny

Doritos is taking advantage of Super Bowl fever! The Frito-Lay brand has posted five semifinalists in its "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, which lets amateur filmmakers get a chance to have their ad run in the big game. Doritos plans to air two of the five finalists— one picked by fans and one chosen by its marketing team. The creator of the ad with the most votes will receive a $1 million grand prize, in addition to seeing their advertisement run during the Super Bowl. The runner-up will receive $50,000, while the other three finalists will each receive $25,000. Fans have until Jan. 29 to vote for their favorite commercial.

Ben & Jerry's Gets High Marks For Colorado Marijuana Tweet

While the legalization of marijuana isn’t a space most brands would leverage in its marketing, one brand wasn’t afraid to use its product as a classic “munchie” to get in on the action of the new law. Ben & Jerry’s, the famous hippie-tinged ice cream brand, issued a tweet Thursday showing an image of a sole ice cream container in the freezer with the tagline “BREAKING NEWS: We’re hearing reports of stores selling out of Ben & Jerry’s in Colorado. What’s up with that?” Fans were quick to show their support, generating more than 3,100 retweets and 1,700 favorites.

Mr. Clean Gives Times Square Post-NYE Scrub Down

On New Year’s Day, 25 people formed the “Mr. Clean Team” to work alongside the New York City Department of Sanitation and the Times Square Alliance to clean up Times Square following the infamous New Year’s Eve Celebration. Led by “The Accidental Housewife,” Julie Edelman, the teams used Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle to help clear up an estimated 40 to 50 tons of confetti.

Twitter-Connected Sharks Alert Swimmers to Potential Attacks

Western Australia is known for the shark attacks that occur in the area each year, which is why the Department of Fisheries has introduced a new system that gives people a warning when the dangerous creatures are in the area. The Shark Monitoring Network detects and monitors more than 300 tagged sharks that are near Western Australia. Each time one of the sharks swims approximately .6 miles from the beach, signals send out a tweet that is posted on Surf Life Saving Western Australia's Twitter account.

Printing Your Dinner With Foodini

Natural Machines introduces Foodini, a 3D printer that can create meals from a collection of already- programmed recipes or even user-generated recipes. After the user inputs a recipe, Foodini will print the ingredients in full form. Foodini will cost around $1,300 and can build anything from a quiche to ravioli, and expects to be released in mid-2014.

Isabelle Palmer, a dancer who is studying ballet at a performing arts school, is the newest doll in the American Girl Doll line. The Isabelle collection is a limited edition line available for only one year. Along with a book line based on Isabelle’s life as a 10-year-old who has a flair for designing ballet costumes, and has trouble adjusting to a new school, American Girl will also launch a movie based on the stories that will premiere on DVD in the summer.

Netflix is trying a different approach, as competition with Amazon streaming rises. The video streaming service has offered a new $6.99 a month plan for new customers looking to stream to only one screen at a time. The new offer is designed to not only attract new customers, but also to collect intelligence by assessing the streaming habits of users, with the potential to soon offer more expensive subscriptions for those looking to stream on multiple devices.

MindMeld is a new iPad app that serves as a personal assistant. It understands its user’s conversations and filters through mentioned topics to recommend relevant information. From restaurants in town to popular tourist attractions around the area, the app can compile lists of information and pictures depending on what people are talking about. Once downloaded for $3.99, users login via a Facebook account and can begin engaging with the app.
