'Sharknado' Spoof by ASPCA Has Bite

The ASPCA capitalized on the media storm surrounding the release of Sharknado 2 with “Barknado,” a spoof campaign from the organization. In the minute long video, a tornado rips through the city streets, picking up dogs without homes. Instead of wreaking terror on people below as seen in the campy SyFy flick, the Barknado drops off the puppies on doorsteps of loving homes, promoting adoption.

Sharks on a Plane: Southwest And Discovery’s Shark Week Event

Southwest Airlines is bringing Shark Week to a higher altitude by offering an in-air channel dedicated to the Discovery Channel’s live content. Additionally, passengers will be able to check out the previously unaired Jaws Strikes Back before its official live presentation.  Southwest is also sponsoring the Dare To Dive contest, where the grand prize is, you guessed it, a chance to swim with the sharks. Jawesome!

Cold Stone Creamery Celebrates Shark Week With a ‘Frenzy’

National ice cream chain, Cold Stone Creamery is once again partnering up with the Discovery Channel to unveil tasty treats during the uber-popular annual series, Shark Week!  For 2014, Cold Stone Creamery has developed two limited edition treats titled SHARK WEEK Frenzy Creations which include The SHARK WEEK Frenzy (Blue Sweet Cream Ice Cream mixed with Graham Cracker Pier Crust and Gummy Sharks) and The Great Blue Cupcake (Chocolate Cup filled with a layer of Yellow Cake and Blue Sweet Ice Cream topped with fluffy Blue Frosting and a Gummy Shark). Both items are currently available in store through Shark Week ending on Aug. 19, 2014.

Great Clips Shows Support For Our Fishy Friends

Great Clips, the world’s largest salon brand, has once created again a Shark Week campaign, which includes salon takeovers with in-salon co-branded signage and Shark Week branding on the Great Clips #5 NASCAR racecar. Fans can also download the Great Clips Check-In app through Aug. 16 and Great Clips will donate $1 to Oceana, the largest international ocean conservation organization.

Shark Week? No, it’s Snark Week

Logo TV launched its first “Snark Week,” airing sitcoms known for their snark, “The Golden Girls,” “Will & Grace,” “Designing Women,” “The Nanny” and “Don't Trust the B— in Apartment 23.” Fans can share and tag friends in meme-ready images called “Snark Bites” that feature iconic one-liners from the shows. Fans can also tweet their own “Snark Bites” using #Snarkweek. The highlight of the week will be the “Snarkiest Moment of the Year” competition on the network’s Facebook site, with the winner airing at the end of the week.

Vision-Enabled Robot Tracks Great Whites For Shark Week Special

An autonomous underwater vehicle with video cameras was used to track and capture up-close footage at Guadalupe Island in Mexico, for the upcoming “Return of Jaws” special airing on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. This “Shark Cam,” which is named REMUS, uses four different GoPro cameras that provide a 360-degree field of view and allows scientists to send commands to change speed and depth. The Shark Cam was successful in tracking great whites underwater for the first time.

Shark Week: Live Returns to Adventure Aquarium

Shark Week: LIVE has returned to New Jersey’s Adventure Aquarium! Through Aug. 17, guests can come face-to-face with the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast, including rarely exhibited species and the only great hammerhead shark on display in the United States. The 550,000-gallon Shark Realm exhibit allows guests to get up close with more than 20 sharks, while true thrill-seekers can brave the suspended 40-ft Shark Tunnel for a 180-degree view. A limited number of guests on the Top of Tank tours will also have the opportunity to witness a shark feeding in return for a $10 donation to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
