JCPenney Has Store Shoppers Surprise Complete Strangers With Gifts

JCPenney has released a video for its #JustGotJingled campaign where JCPenney staffers approached customers and asked if they wanted to buy a present for a fellow shopper. JCPenney then picked up the tab with no price limit, issuing heartfelt reactions that captured the true spirit of the holidays. There is also a website, www.justgotjingled.com, where JCPenney is sharing random acts of kindness that users have submitted through social media using the hashtag #JustGotJingled.

Quaker, Jawbone’s Breakfast Challenge Leverages Mobile to Feed The Hungry

The Quaker Oats Company is teaming with wearable tech device Jawbone to donate meals to Feeding America. Users can directly benefit the cause by logging their breakfast entrees with photos on Jawbone's corresponding UP mobile application. Quaker jumpstarted this initiative by donating an equivalent of 100,000 meals and will donate up to an additional 100,000 meals for every breakfast a consumer tracks on UP.

@Virgintrains Kick Off The Festive Season With #Traindeer

Virgin Trains have brought Christmas cards to life this holiday season with the launch of the new “Traindeer.” Inspired by the design submitted by sisters Ella and Ruby Cheshire to a children’s Christmas card competition, the #traindeer sports a Rudolph paint scheme and is driven by Santa in the United Kingdom. The stunt aims to promote the sale of the winning Christmas cards, which are on sale now with all proceeds benefiting the Riff Raff charity.

Swarovski Introduces New Label

Australian crystal maker Swarovski has launched a new label to highlight the authenticity of its crystals. The seal tag will bear the signature of Daniel Swarovski, who founded the company in 1895, along with a unique alphanumeric code certifying the authenticity of the crystal, as well as its own accuracy to be verifiable on the company’s website.

Taxi Ride or Unexpected Adventure? The North Face Gave New Yorkers a Choice

The North Face launched a campaign for New Yorkers called, “#SeeForYourselfCab,” which roamed the streets of NYC. When passengers hailed the cab, they were shown a video offering the opportunity to drop everything for the entire day and go on an unexpected outdoor adventure. The adventures included surfing in the Rockaways, biking in the Catskills and kayaking in Utah. The participants were filmed and used in a TV ad and an online video for the brand, spreading the “Carpe Diem” message.

Lowe's Explores Native Tools on Vine, Instagram

Lowe's has launched a new digital campaign as it revs up the spring selling season. A new Vine series, called "How-To Tap Thru," breaks projects into steps viewers can pause, turning a quick video into a tutorial. The brand is also using Instagram to feature videos focusing on the journey of a project and its end result.

Canadiens Honor Jean Beliveau

The Montreal Canadiens, one of the most storied franchises in sports, recently lost a player, Jean Beliveau, who was considered by many to be its greatest of all time. Following a touching ceremony before the first home game after his passing, the team announced the evening’s attendance as 21,286 - one short of capacity. That one seat snapped a 383-game, decade-long sell-out streak. But that seat, illuminated with his iconic #4, was Beliveau’s. And the Canadiens realized that honoring the legacy of the man who had done so much for the team and the city was far more important than any additional sales, or any sellout streak, ever could be.

Bitly Helps The Red Cross Get to Hope.ly

The American Red Cross is introducing a fundraising effort with Bitly, the online tool that condenses long web addresses. The Red Cross is introducing Hope.ly, another URL condenser.  Instead of a web address shortening with a bit.ly prefix, the new tool from the Red Cross will use a hope.ly prefix and will don a banner ad at the top of the page encouraging people to donate online to the American Red Cross.

Merriam-Webster Names Word of The Year

Merriam-Webster dictionary has announced the word of the year, "culture," defined as, a nation, a workplace, an ethnicity, a passion, an outsized personality. Merriam-Webster based its pick on significant increases of lookups this year over last on Merriam-Webster.com. Of an estimated 100 million lookups on the website each year and a similar number on the company's app, culture enjoyed a 15 percent year-over-year increase. The No. 2 word is "nostalgia."
