ISSUE:
The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters looked to Coyne PR to help spin their way into the media for the Presidential Inauguration by gifting one of the country’s biggest basketball fans, then President-elect Barack Obama, with something special to make him feel at home in the White House.
IDEA:
Famous around the globe for their signature red, white and blue basketballs, the Globetrotters created four “official” red, white and blue presidential basketballs for the President-elect and each member of his family, to serve as the “Official Basketballs” of the White House.
A Globetrotters player was on hand to help the team pack and ship the specially-made balls embossed with the presidential seal and the words, “Official Ball of the White House,” to Obama’s transition office in Chicago.
Additionally, the team honored the incoming President on Inauguration Day by having each Globetrotter wear the same uniform number, 44, as a tribute to the 44th President of the United States.
IMPACT:
The announcement of the special delivery and number 44 jerseys was a slam dunk with the media, generating stories across the country and more than 30 million media impressions. Key highlights included the Associated Press, USA Today, ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and “Mike & Mike,” Washington Post’s “Inauguration Watch” blog, New York Post, New York Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times and more! |
